Subject: 08.06.19 Postdoctoral Researcher, Photonics Systems Group, Tyndall National Institute, Ireland
Postdoctoral Researcher in All-Optical Switching Techniques for Optical
Networks

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Photonics
Systems Group at the Tyndall National Institute, part of University College
Cork, Ireland.

The post is in the field of high-speed all-optical signal processing, for
applications in all-optical switching, logic, wavelength conversion and
regeneration. Techniques for all-optical regeneration have been developed
based on the use of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) as non-linear
elements in interferometric switches. Accordingly, the project to be
undertaken by the holder of this post will seek to develop and demonstrate
novel switching techniques using SOAs for a variety of applications in
optical communication systems. The holder will be part-funded under EU
project WISDOM, which is a three year EU funded project to realise an
all-optical firewall.

The successful applicant will join an established team within the Photonic
Systems Group, will carry out research in purpose-built photonic systems
research facilities at the Tyndall National Institute, and will be involved
in collaboration with other groups in Tyndall and elsewhere. Training
opportunities will be provided to acquire additional experimental and
numerical research skills as appropriate.

Applicants for this position should have a PhD in Physics, Electronic
Engineering or related subject, and should have experience in all-optical
switching techniques. A sound knowledge of the physics of SOAs and/or
semiconductor lasers and a familiarity with state-of-the-art modulation
formats would be considered an advantage. Appointees must have excellent
verbal and written communication skills and be able to work in a team
environment.

The post is for a period of two years. The salary range is 38,623-54,774.
The level of appointment will depend upon experience
